Pengobatan Kuno Sangat Mengerikan

Sudah diketahui pengobatan ada sejak berabad-abad lalu. Tapi sebuah buku yang berumur 300 tahun memperlihatkan proses pengobatan di masa lalu sangat mengerikan. Buku yang ditulis pada 1712 berjudul Treatise of The Operations of Surgery, menjabarkan prosedur mencekamkan dalam proses amputasi sebelum pembiusan ditemukan.

"Melakukan pembedahan tanpa pembiusan sulit dibayangkan", kata Howard Ellis, professor bedah di Westminster Medical School dan penulis A History of Surgery.

Save Time and Money With A Registry Cleaner

A Computer is an expensive piece of equipment and as such needs treated with care and attention. Like any other machinery it will gradually succumb to general wear and tear and this can develop into a serious problem if regular maintenance is not carried out. If your PC is not kept in good condition or is subjected to abuse, expensive repairs will be necessary to resolve the issues.

So how can a registry cleaner help save your money?
Most computers will have data stored that can cause the system to become unreliable. This information can greatly interfere with the performance of your PC and can be the reason why you may be experiencing slow running times, freezes or even system crashes. These all indicate that there is a severe problem with your PC that needs to be rectified.

How can these issues be resolved? First of all it's necessary to find out what exactly is causing the problems. The most common reasons include :
1. Conflicting hardware
2. Wear and tear of the internal components
3. Too many background applications running
4. Insufficient space on your hard disk
5. Not enough memory installed
6. The Windows registry becoming overloaded with information

Of these reasons, the most likely cause of your computer performing poorly is a Windows registry cluttered with out of date and unnecessary files. Obsolete and redundant files will cause overload in the registry and cause the symptoms mentioned previously.

To resolve these issues it is necessary to eliminate all the files from the registry which are no longer needed. The best way to this is by using a reliable registry cleaner. Running a registry cleaner will increase the speed of your PC and improve its stability whilst also deleting any files which may pose a threat to your computers security. Performing regular maintenance of the Windows registry will keep it performing at optimal levels. 5 Tips for Cleaning Your PC

Delete Old Files

Possibly the most obvious place to start cleaning up your PC is by deleting all the old files you no longer use or need. Don't waste important space on your hard drive by keeping old files and folders. If there are files or photographs you wish to keep, free up space by burning them to disk or upload them on to a website - more than one if necessary. An email inbox can also be used for this purpose. Remember to delete old PDF documents and e-books as well.

Help Your Hard Drive
Your hard drive will store many files which were downloaded while you were using the internet. If you notice the speed of your PC slowing down then you probably need to clean up the internet files stored on your computer. To do this navigate to My Computer - Control Panel - Internet Options. A box will appear on screen and in the section marked Temporary Internet Files, click on Delete Files. Using the settings option, you might think of changing "Amount of disk space to use". To give your PC a more comprehensive clean up try the following steps to run a disk clean up : Go to Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools and choose which drive you wish to clean. If you haven't yet cleaned out the Temporary Internet Files you can do so from here. Other files which can be removed here are Downloaded Program Files, Temporary Files stored on that particular drive and the Recycle Bin. By using the More Options tab there are additional programs and components which can be deleted.

Clean Your CPU Unit Regularly
As well as cleaning the software components of your PC it is important to remember the external hardware components also need regular looking after. Many system crashes and slow running machines are caused by dirty and dusty CPU units. Clean your cables to free them of dust, check the fan and clean the air holes of your PC as dust gathered can cause your system to overheat, possibly to dangerous levels and if not regularly kept clean may damage your hardware irreparably. When cleaning your PC hardware components, unplug all power cables and use a vacuum specially designed for computers. Alternatively use a variety of sizes and coarseness of paint brushes and a few clean soft cloths. This option will only be of use if regular upkeep is maintained. Remember never try to wipe clean the internal components such as the motherboard or cards.

Uninstall Old Programs
Remove all the old programs you don't use anymore including any files and folders left over. If you are constantly installing new programs having lots of installation exe files cluttering your computer hard drive can slow up your PC. Also this frequent installing and uninstalling will leave old data and file fragments stored on your hard drive long after the applications have been removed. To clean these files out, right click on the hard drive icon on your PC, click on explore and Program Files. You can safely delete all the empty files and folders from the programs no longer installed. It is a good idea to use a powerful registry cleaner such as RegCure to clean up your PC efficiently. Registry cleaners are completely safe to use as they will only delete old files your system no longer needs or uses. A good tip to see what may have silently downloaded on your PC is to press CTRL+ALT+DEL simultaneously, this will bring up Task Manager which will show all applications currently running on your computer, including those running in the background . Some of these download automatically when you surf certain websitesand usually contain adware or spyware. Run a spyware cleaner to remove these programs before running RegCure to get rid of all the leftover fragments.

Update Your Passwords
Sometimes giving your PC drives a thorough clean can affect old password cookies. To fix this, visit the Microsoft technical support website where you can download a tool which will update and replace old passwords. This is a small download and is free to use.

4 Tips to Prevent Expensive PC Repairs

Early detection of any problems your PC may be having is vital to prevent further damage from occurring. Therefore it's important for every computer user to spend some time looking for any signs of trouble. It's highly recommended that you keep your PC in good health and you will be rewarded with a fast, smoothly running machine.

Carrying out regular maintenance will alert you to any sign of trouble ahead. Catching any problems early can mean the difference between a simple clean up or a costly repair job.

The following steps should be carried out on a regular basis and should keep your PC in tip top condition.

1. Run Disk Defragmenter.

Over time, the data stored on your PCs hard drive will scatter as information is stored randomly according to what free space is available. This will result in your computer taking longer periods to access the necessary files and therefore a slower performing PC. Defragging will shift these blocks of data so they sit simultaneously as much as possible, making your computer locate data much quicker.

How to defrag your PC :
- Click on Start
- Choose Programs
- Select Accessories
- Click on System Tools
- Select Disk Defragmenter
- Choose the drive you want defragmented

Defragmenting the hard drive can take quite a considerable amount of time. Always close down any programs that are running as these may cause the tool to restart every so often.

2. Use Disk Cleanup.

The Windows Operating System has an in-built system tool which will remove unneeded files safely from the hard disk. A hard disk which is cluttered with data an cause a slow performing PC. The Disk Cleanup tool is used for the following maintenance tasks :
- To empty the recycle bin
- To delete temporary Windows and the Internet files
- To delete unused programs and applications
- To delete downloaded program files
- To remove obsolete Windows components

3. Remove Spyware and Adware.

Whilst surfing the Internet or downloading files and programs, these malicious pieces of software can be installed on your PC unintentionally . They can cause severe performance problems and can pose a security threat so need to be dealt with properly. Running regular Spyware and Adware scans will remove these unwanted programs and restore your PC to optimal performance levels.

4. Scan Your Registry.

With regular installation and removal of programs and even general day to day tasks, lots of information gets placed in the Windows Registry, some of which will no longer be needed. This redundant data overloads the registry, making the PC take longer in locating required information, which in turn slows up your computers speed and can cause your system to stall or crash. By running a registry scan regularlythis unnecessary data can be located and removed resulting in a much more efficient registry system and therefore a fast smooth running PC. We highly recommend the newest version of RegCure 2008.

Performing regular maintenance tasks on your PC will root out any problems before damage can be caused.

Dracula Legend

Some say that Transylvania sits on one of earth's strongest magnetic fields and its people have extra-sensory perceptions. Vampires are believed to hang around crossroads on St.George's Day, April 23rd, and the eve of St.Andrew, November 29th. The area is also home to Bram Stoker's Dracula and it's easy to get caught up in the tale while driving along winding roads through dense, dark, ancient forests and mountain passes.

Count Dracula, a fictional character in the Dracula novel, was inspired by one of the best-known figures of the Romanian history - Vlad Dracula, nickname Vlad Tepes (Vlad the Impaler) - who was a ruler of Wallachia (1456-1462).

An Intriguing Figure in The Fifteenth Century by Benjamin Hugo Leblanc -EPHE- Sorbonne (Paris) & Laval University (Quebec) Count Dracula is more than 100 years old and still alive! Of course, almost everybody has heard about this Nosferatu: through movies featuring Max Schreck, Bela Lugosi, Christopher Lee or Gary Oldman; in several books - among which the recent Vampire Chronicles of Anne Rice; or even in bedtime stories told to us in our childhood. We all have an idea of who or what the Count is. However, on the other hand, Vlad Tepes (Dracula), the historical figure who inspired Bram Stoker for his novel, is definitely less known.

Vlad Tepes was born in December 1431, in the fortress of Sighisoara, Romania. Vlad's father, governor of Transylvania, had been inducted into the Order of the Dragon about one year before. The order - which could be compared to the Knights of the Hospital of St. John or even to the Teutonic Order of Knights - was a semi-military and religious society; originally created in 1387 by the Holy Roman Emperor and his second wife, Barbara Cilli. The main goal of such a secret fraternal order of knights was mainly to protect the interests of Christianity and to crusade against the Turks. The boyars of Romania associated the dragon with the Devil and decided to call Vlad's father "Dracul" - which in Romanian language, means ""Devil"; "Dracula" is a diminutive, which means "the son of the Devil".

In the winter of 1436-1437, Dracul became prince of Wallachia (one of the three Romanian provinces) and took up residence at the palace of Tirgoviste, the princely capital. Vlad followed his father and lived six years at the princely court. In 1442, in order to keep the Turks at bay, Dracul sent his son Vlad and his younger brother Radu, to Istanbul, as hostages of the Sultan Murad II, Vlad was held in there until 1448. This Turkish captivity surely played an important role in Dracula's upbringing; it must be at this period that he adopted a very pessimistic view of live and learned the Turkish method of impalement on stakes. The Turks set Vlad free after informing him of his father's assassination in 1447. He also learned about his older brother's death and how he had been tortured and buried alive by the boyars of Tirgoviste.

When he was 17 years old, Vlad Tepes (Dracula), supported by a force of Turkish cavalry and a contingent of troops lent to him by pasha Mustafa Hassan, made his first major move toward seizing the Wallachian throne. Vlad became the ruler of Wallachia in July of 1456. During his six-year reign he committed many cruelties, and hence established his controversial reputation.

His first major act of revenge was aimed at the boyars of Tirgoviste for not being loyal to his father. On Easter Sunday of what we believe to be 1459, he arrested all the boyar families who had participated at the princely feast. He impaled the older ones on stakes while forcing the others to march from the capital to the town of Poenari. This fifty-mile trek was quite grueling and no one was permitted to rest until they reached destination. Dracula then ordered boyars to build him a fortress on the ruins of an older outpost overlooking the Arges River. Many died in the process, and Dracula therefore succeeded in creating a new nobility and obtaining a fortress for future emergencies. What is left today of the building is identified as Poenari Fortress (Cetatea Poenari).

Vlad Tepes adopted the method of impaling criminals and enemies and raising them aloft in the town square for all to see. Almost any crime, from lying and stealing to killing, could be punished by impalement. Being so confident in the effectiveness of his law, Dracula placed a golden cup on display in the central square of Tirgoviste. The cup could be used by thirsty travelers, but had to remain on the square. According to the available historic sources, it was never stolen and remained entirely unmolested throughout Vlad's reign. Crime and corruption ceased; commerce and culture thrived, and many Romanians to this day view Vlad Tepes as a hero for his fierce insistence on honesty and order.

In the beginning of 1462, Vlad launched a campaign against the Turks along the Danube River. It was quite risky, the military force of Sultan Mehmed II being by far more powerful than the Wallachian army. However, during the winter of 1462, Vlad was very successful and managed to gain several victories. To punish Dracula, the Sultan decided to launch a full-scale invasion of Wallachia. His other goal was to transform this land into a Turkish province. He entered Wallachia with an army three times larger than Dracula's. Finding himself without allies, and forced to retreat towards Tirgoviste, Vlad burned his own villages and poisoned the wells along the way, so that the Turkish army would find nothing to eat or drink. Moreover, when the Sultan, exhausted, finally reached the capital city, he was confronted by a most gruesome sight : hundreds of stakes held the remaining carcasses of Turkish captives, a horror scene which was ultimately nicknamed the "Forest of The Impaled". This teror tactic deliberately stage-managed by Dracula was definitely successful; the scene had a strong effect on Mehmed's most stout-hearted officers, and the Sultan, tired and hungry, decided to withdraw (it is worth mentioning that even Victor Hugo, in his Legende des Siecles, recalls this particular incident). Nevertheless, following his retreat from Wallachian territory, Mehmed encouraged and supported Vlad's younger brother Radu to take the Wallachian throne. At the head of a Turkish army and joined by Vlad's detractors, Radu pursued his brother to Poenari Castle on the Arges river. According to the legend, this is when Dracula's wife, in order to escape capture, committed suicide by hurling herself from the upper battlements, her body falling down the precipice into the river below - a scene exploited by Francis Ford Coppola's production. Vlad, who was definitely not the kind of a man to kill himself, managed to escape the siege of his fortress by using a secret passage into the mountain. He was however, assassinated toward the end of December 1476.

The Only real link between the historical Dracula (1431-1476) and the modern literary myth of the vampire is the 1897 novel. Bram Stoker built his fictional character solely based on the research that he conducted in libraries in London. Political detractors and Saxon merchants, unhappy with the new trade regulations imposed by Vlad, did everything they could to blacken his reputation. They produced and disseminated throughout Western Europe exaggerated stories and illustrations about Vlad's cruelty. Vlad Tepes reign was however presented in a different way in chronicles written in other parts of Europe. (Excerpts from a feature published in Issue #5 of Journal of The Dark, Benjamin Leblanc).

World's Most Dangerous Animals

Deadliest animals in the world ranked by estimated number of human fataliteis per year :

Over 2 million deaths per year resulting from malaria infection caused by mosquito bites. The mosquito is a member of the family Culicidae; these insects have a pair of scaled wings, a pair of halteres, a slender body, and long legs. The females of most mosquito species suck blood from other animals.

2. Snake.
Over 100,000 deaths per year. Snakes, also known as ophidians, are cold-blooded legless reptiles closely related to lizards, which share the order Squamata. There are also several species of legless lizard which superficially resemble snakes, but are not otherwise related to them.

3. Scorpion.
Up to 5,000 deaths per year. A scorpion is an invertebrate animal with eight legs, belonging to the order Scorpiones in the class Arachnida.

4. Crocodile.
Up to 2,000 deaths per year. A crocodile is any species belonging to the family Crocodylidae. The term can also be used more loosely to include all members of the order Crocodilia: i.e the true crocodiles, the alligators and caimans and the gharials. The crocodiles, colloquially called crocs, are large aquatic reptiles that live throughout the Tropics in Africa, Asia, the Americas and Australia.

5. Elephant.
Over 600 deaths per year. Elephantidae is a family of pachyderm, and the only remaining family in the order Proboscidea in the class Mammalia. Elephantidae has three living species: the African Bush Elephant and the African Forest Elephant and the Asian Elephant.

6. Bee.
Over 400 deaths per year. Bees are flying insects, closely related to wasps and ants. There are approximately 20,000 species of bees, and they may be found on every continent except Antarctica. Bees are adapted for feeding on nectar and pollen, the former primarily as an energy source, and the latter primarily for protein and other nutrients.

7. Lion.
Over 250 deaths per year. The lion is a mammal of the family Felidae and one of four "big cats" in the genus Panthera. The lion is the second largest cat, after the tiger. The male lion, easily recognized by his mane, weighs between 150-225 kg. In the wild, lions live for around 10-14 years, while in captivity they can live over 20 years.

8. Hippopotamus.
Over 200 deaths per year. The hippopotamus, from the Greek,is a large, plant-eating African mammal, one of only two extant, and three or four recently extinct, species in the family Hippopotamidae.

9. Jellyfish.
Over 100 deaths per year. Jellyfish are marine invertebrates belonging to the Scyphozoan class, and in turn the phylum Cnidaria. The body of an adult jellyfish is composed of a bell-shaped, jellylike substance enclosing its internal structure, from which the creature's tentacles suspend.

10. Shark.
30-100 deaths per year. Sharks are fish with a full cartilaginous skeleton and a streamlined body. They respire with the use of five to seven gill slits. Sharks have a covering of dermal denticles to protect their skin from damage, parasites and to improve fluid dynamics.

Top 10 Strangest Animals

This list doesn't focus on an animals 'ugliness', but on their strange and unusual characteristics. Some have been around for hundreds or even thousands of years, but they may be new to you.

10. Frill-necked Lizard, Wikipedia

The Frill-necked Lizard, also known as the Frilled Dragon, is so called because of the large ruff of skin which usually lies folded back against its head and neck. Long spines of cartilage support the neck frill, and when the lizard is frightened, it opens its mouth showing a bright pink or yellow lining, and the frill flares out, displaying bright orange and red scales. They often walk on four legs when on the ground. When frightened they begin to run on all fours and then accelerate onto the hind-legs. The frill of the Australian frilled dragon is used to frighten off potential predators, as well as hissing and lunging.

9. Dumbo Octopus,
Wikipedia

The Octopuses of the genus Grimpoteuthis are also known as "Dumbo Octopuses" from the ear-like fins protruding from the top of their "heads" (actually bodies), resembling the ears of Walt Disney's flying elephant. They are benthic creatures, living at extreme depths, and are some of the rarest of the Octopoda species. They can flush the transparent layer of their skin at will, and are open ocean animals, unlike most octopi.

8. Angora Rabbit,
Wikipedia

The Angora rabbit is a variety of domestic rabbit bred for its long, soft hair. The rabbits were popular pets with French royalty in the mid 1700s, and spread to other parts of Europe by the end of the century. They are bred largely for their long wool, which may be removed by shearing or plucking (gently pulling loose wool).

7. Tasmanian Tiger, Wikipedia

The Thylacine was the largest known carnivorous marsupial of modern times. Native to Australia and New Guinea, it is thought to have become extinct in the 20th century. It is commonly known as the Tasmanian Tiger (due to its striped back), the Tasmanian Wolf, and colloquially the Tassie (or Tazzy) Tiger. It was the last extant member of its genus, Thylacinus, although a number of related species have been found in the fossil record dating back to the early Miocene. The Thylacine became extinct on the Australian mainland thousands of years before European settlement of the continent, but survived on the island of Tasmanian along with a number of other endemic species, including the Tasmanian Devil. Intensive hunting encouraged by bounties is generally blamed for its extinction, but other contributory factors may have been disease, the introduction of dogs, and human encroachment into its habitat. Despite being officially classified as extinct, sightings are still reported.

6. Platypus, Wikipedia

The Platypus is a semi-aquatic mammal endemic to eastern Australia. Together with the four species of echidna, it is one of the five mammals that lay eggs instead of giving birth to live young. The bizarre appearance of this egg-laying, duck-billed mammal baffled naturalists when it was first discovered, with some considering it an elaborate fraud. it is one of the few venomous mammals; the male Platypus has a spur on the hind foot, which delivers a poison capable of causing severe pain to humans. The unique features of the Platypus make it an important subject in the study of evolutionary biology and recognizeable and iconic symbol of Australia; it has appeared as a mascot at national events and is featured on the reverse of the Australian 20 cent coin.

5. Narwhal, Wikipedia

The Narwhal is an Arctic species of cetacean. It is one of two species of white whale, the other being the Beluga whale. The most conspicuous characteristic of male narwhal is their single extraordinarily long tusk, an incisor that projects from the left side of the upper jaw and forms a left-handed helix. The tusk can be up to nearly 10 feet long and weigh up to 22 pounds. About one in 500 males has two tusks, which occurs when the right tooth, normally small, also grows out. The purpose of the tusk has been the subject of nuch debate. Early scientific theories suggested that the tusk was used to pierce the ice covering the narwhal's Arctic Sea habitat. Others suggested the tusk was used in echolocation. More recently, scientists believed the tusk is primarily used for showmanshipand for dominance: males with larger tusks are more likely to successfully attract a mate.

4. Anglerfish, Wikipedia

Anglerfish are named for their characteristic mode of perdition, where in a fleshy growth from the fish's head ( the esca ) acts as a lure. Anglerfish also have spines protruding from their head, moveable in all directions. The esca can be wiggled so as to resemble a prey animal, and thus to act as bait to lure other predators. Deep-sea anglerfish live mainly in the oceans aphotic zones, where the water is to deep for the sun to penetrate; therefore their perdition relies on the "lure" being bioluminescent. Since individuals are presumably locally rare and encounters doubly so, finding a mate is problematic. When scientists first started capturing ceratioid anglerfish, they noticed that all of the specimens were females. These individuals were a few inches in size and almost all of them had what appeared to be parasites attached to them. It turned out that these "parasites" were the remains of male ceratioids.

3. Leafy Sea-dragon, Wikipedia

Named after the dragons of Chinese mythology, Leafy Sea-dragons resemble a piece of drifting seaweed as they float in the seaweed-filled water. The Leafy Sea-dragon, with green, orange and gold hues along its body, is covered with leaf-like appendages, making it remarkably camouflaged. Only the fluttering of tiny fins or the moving of an independently swiveling eye reveals its presence. Sea-dragons have no teeth or stomach and feed exclusively on mysidopsis shrimp. Known as "Australian seahorses" in Australia, they are found in calm, cold water that is approximately 50-54 degree Fahrenheit. The South Australian government since 1982 has protected Leafy Sea-dragons.

2. Yeti Crab, Wikipedia

Kiwa hirsuta is a crustacean discovered in 2005 in the South Pacific Ocean. This decapod, 6 inches long, is notable for the quantity of silky blond setae ( resembling fur ) covering thoracic legs and claws. Its discoverers dubbed it the "yeti lobster" or "yeti crab". Based on both morphology and molecular data, the species was deemed to form a new genus and family ( Kiwaidae ). The animal has strongly reduced eyes that lack pigment, and is thought to be blind. The 'hairy' pincers contain filamentous bacteria, which the creature may use to detoxify poisonous minerals from the water emitted by the hydrothermal vents where it lives. Alternatively, it may feed on the bacteria, although it is thought to be a general carnivore. Its diet also consists of green algae and small shrimp.

1. Coelacanth, Wikipedia

Coelacanth is the common name for an order of fish that includes the oldest living lineage of jawed fish known to date. The coelacanths, which are related to lungfishes and tetrapods, were believed to have been extinct since the end of the Cretaceous period, until the first specimen was found off the east coast of South Africa, off the Chalumna River in 1938. Since 1938, they have been found in the Comoros, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Madagascar, among other places. Coelacanths first appear in the fossil record in the Middle Devonian, about 410 million years ago. Coelacanths are lobe-finned fish with the pectoral and anal fins on fleshy stalks supported by bones, and the tail or caudal fin diphycercal ( divided into three lobes ), the middle one of which also includes a continuation of the notochord.

World's Most Haunted Places

The Myrtles Plantation.
Built in 1796 by General David Bradford, this stately old home is said to be haunted be several restless ghosts. Some researchers say as many as ten murders have been committed there, but others, such as Troy Taylor and David Wisehart, have only been able to confirm one murder at Myrtles. (Those two authors provide a very good history of the house in their articles, The Legends, Lore & Lies of The Myrtles Plantation).

Even they agree, however, that the place is seriously haunted and easily qualifies as one of the "most haunted". These are some of the ghosts that allegedly haunt the house :
- Cleo, a former slave who was allegedly hung on the premises for killing two little girls. (Those murders and even the existence of Cleo are in question).
- The ghosts of the two murdered children have been seen playing on the veranda.
- William Drew Winter, an attorney who lived at Myrtles from 1860 to 1871. He was shot on the side porch of the house by a stranger. With his life's blood pouring from his body, Winter staggered into the house and began to climb the stairs to the second floor...but didn't make it. He collapsed and died on the 17th step. It is his last dying footsteps that can still be heard on the staircase to this day. (Winter's murder is the only one that has been verified).
- The ghosts of the other slaves allegedly occasionally show up to ask if they can do any chores.
- The grand piano has often been heard to play by itself, repeating one haunting chord.

The Tower of London.
The tower of London, one of the most famous and well-preserved historical buildings in the world, may also be one of the most haunted. This is due, no doubt, to the scores of executions, murders and tortures that have taken place within its walls over the last 1,000 years. Dozens upon dozens of ghost sightings have been reported in and around the Tower. On one winter day in 1957 at 3 a.m, a guard was disturbed by something striking the top of his guardhouse. When he stepped outside to investigate, he saw a shapeless white figure on top of the tower. It was then realized that on that very same date, February 12, Lady Jane Grey was beheaded in 1554.

Perhaps the most well-known ghostly resident of the tower is the spirit of Ann Boleyn, one of the wives of Henry VIII, who was also beheaded in the towerin 1536. Her ghost has been spotted on many occasions, sometimes carrying her head, on Tower Green and in the Tower Chapel Royal.

Other ghosts of the Tower include those of Henry VI, Thomas a Becket and Sir Walter Raleigh. One of the most gruesome ghost stories connected with the Tower of London describes death of the Countess of Salisbury. According to one account, " the Countess was sentenced to death in 1541 following her alleged involvement in criminal activities (although it is now widely believed that she was probably innocent). After being sent struggling to the scaffold, she ran from the block and was pursued until she was hacked to death by the axe man ". Her execution ceremony has been seen re-enacted by spirits on Tower Green.

Eastern State Penitentiary
.
Eastern State Penitentiary has become a favorite destination for ghost hunters as well as the public at large since it has been opened to tours.

Built in 1829, the impossing Gothic structure was originally designed to hold 250 inmates in solitary confinement. At the height of its use, however, as many as 1,700 prisoners were crammed into the cells. Like many such places of high emotional stress, misery and death, the prison has become haunted.

One of its most famous inmates was none other than Al Capone, was incarcerated there on illegal weapons possession in 1929. During his stay, it is said that Capone was tormented by the ghost of James Clark, one of the men Capone had murdered in the infamous St. Valentine's Day massacre.

Other reported haunting activity includes :
- A shadow-like figure that scoots quickly away when approached.
- A figure that stands in the guard tower.
- An evil cackling reportedly comes from cellblock 12.
- In cellblock 6, another shadow figure has been seen sliding down the wall.
- Mysterious, ghostly faces are said to appear in cellblock 4.

Unfortunately, not all of these cells are open to the public, even on the tours.

The Queen Mary.
This grand old ship is quite haunted, according to many people who have worked on and visited the craft. Once a celebrated luxury ocean liner, when it ended its sailing days the Queen Mary was purchased by the city of Long Beach, Californiain 1967 and transformed into a hotel.

The most haunted area of the ship is the engine room where a 17-year-old sailor was crushed to death trying to escape a fire. Knocking and banging on the pipes around the door has been heard and recorded by numerous people. In what is now the front desk area of the hotel, visitors have seen the ghost of a " lady in white ".

Ghosts of children are said to haunt the ship's pool. The spirit of a young girl, who allegedly broke her neck in an accident at the pool, has been heard asking for her mother or her doll. In the hallway of the pool's changing rooms is an area of unexplained activity. Furniture moves about by itself, people feel the touch of unseen hands and unknown spirits appear. In the front hull of the ship, a specter can sometimes be heard screaming - the pained voice, some believe, of a sailor who was killed when the Queen Mary collided with a smaller ship.

Waverly Hills Sanatorium.
The original Waverly Hills Sanatorium, a two-story wooden structure, was opened in 1910, but the larger brick and concrete structure as it stand today was completed in 1926. The hospital was always dedicated to the treatment of tuberculosis patients, a disease that was fairly common in the early 20th Century.

It is estimated that as many as 63,000 people died as the sanatorium. Those deaths coupled with the reports of severe mistreatment of patients and highly questionable experiments and procedures are ingredients for a haunted location.

Ghost investigators who have ventured into Waverly have reported a host of strange paranormal phenomena, including voices of unknown origin, isolated cold spots and unexplained shadows. Screams have been heard echoing in its now abandoned hallways, and fleeting apparitions have been encountered.

The Whaley House.
Located in San Diego, California, The Whaley House has earned the title of " the most haunted house in the U.S ". Built in 1857 by Thomas Whaley on land that was partially once a cemetery, the house has since been the locus of dozens of ghost sightings.

Author deTraci Regula relates her experiences with the house : " Over the years, while dining across the street at the Old Town Mexican Cafe, I became accustomed to noticing that the shutters of the second-story windows (of the Whaley House) would sometimes open while we ate dinner, long after the house was closed for the day. On a recent visit, I could feel the energy in several spots in the house, particularly in the courtroom, where I also smelled the faint scent of a cigar, supposedly Whaley's calling-card. In the hallway, I smelled perfume, initially attributing that to the young woman acting as docent, but some later surreptitious sniffing in her direction as I talked to her about the house revealed her to be scent-free ".

Some of the other ghostly encounters include :
- The spirit of a young girl who was accidentally hanged on the property.
- The ghost of Yankee Jim Robinson, a thief who was clubbed to death and who can be heard on the house's stairway where he died, and has sometimes been seen during tours of the old house.
- The red-haired daughter of the Whaley's sometimes appears in such a realistic form; she is sometimes mistaken for a live child.

Raynham Hall
.
Raynham Hall in Norfolk, England, is most famous for the ghost of " The Brown Lady " which was captured on film in 1936 in what is considered one of the most authentic ghost pictures ever taken.

The Unexplained Site describes one of the first encounters with the spirit : " the first known sighting happened during the 1835 Christmas season. Colonel Loftus, who happened to be visiting for the holidays, was walking to his room late one night when he saw a strange figure ahead of him. As he tried to gain a better look, the figure promptly disappeared. The next week, the Colonel was again came upon the woman. He described her as a noble woman who wore a brown satin dress. Her face seemed to glow, which highlighted her empty eye sockets ".

The White House.
That's right, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington,D.C is not only home to current President of The United States, it also is home of several former presidents who occasionally decide to make their presences known there, despite the fact that they are dead.

President Harrison is said to be heard rummaging around in the attic of the White House, looking for who knows what. President Andrew Jackson is thought to haunt his White House bedroom. And the ghost of First Lady Abigail Adams was seen floating through one of the White House hallways, as if carrying something.

The most frequently sighted presidential ghost has been that of Abraham Lincoln. Eleanor Roosevelt once stated she believed she felt the presence of Lincoln watching her as she worked in the Lincoln bedroom. Also during the Roosevelt administration, a young clerk claimed to have actually seen the ghost of Lincoln sitting on a bed pulling off his boots. On another occasion, while spending a night at the White House during the Roosevelt presidency, Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands was awakened by a knock on the bedroom door. Answering it, she was confronted with the ghost of Abe Lincoln staring at her from the hallway. Calvin Coolidge's wife reported seeing on several occasions the ghost of Lincoln standing with his hand clasped behind his back, at a window in the Oval Office, staring out in deep contemplation toward the bloody battlefields across the Potomac.

Dreams Come True

Naozumi "Nao" Tsuchiyama, a 26-years-old Japanese language instructor whose right leg was amputated as a child and now wears a prosthetic, had always wanted to become a boxer.

To do so, he neede a boxing license but was denied this in his home country on account of his physical condition. So, he went abroad but even then it wasn't easy for him.

The first time he applied for a boxing license from the Games and Amusement Board (GAB) in the Phillippines, he was rejected because his condition was deemed not fit for boxing. Medical examinations showed otherwise, but the GAB would not budge.

Last August, he took part in a trial fight in the Phillippines where he impressed the GAB officials in attendance. Despite a favorable recommendation from these representatives who were impressed with his performance, the GAB still rejected his application.

Undeterred, Nao persisted and flew to South Korea to take part in the World Boxing Association's annual conference. He returned to the Phillippines with the assurance that there is no International Policy preventing him from fighting professionally. This time around, the GAB relented and gave him his license. Nao will be fighting his third match in the Phillippines on Aug 09,2007.

If there's a will, there's always a way.
